So, let's explain this particular case: MTN is a mobile operator in South Africa which operated the site MTNSMS.com which offered the opportunity to send free sms to virtually anyone in the world. They could do this because they had their own mobile operator and could send sms messages to any operator in the world without any cost.
At this time mobile operators believed that if one operator "A" permitted another operator "B" to send free sms into its network this would in the end even up with the fact that also operator "B" let operator "A" send free sms into its network. However, what happened when services such as MTNSMS launched was that operator MTN might send 1 million messages to operator "B" from a free sms web service when subscribers of operator "B" only might send 1000 messages back to subscribers of MTN in South Africa. This lead to a large handling cost for all mobile operators they hadn't taken into account. For a while this worked good and people could happily send free sms almost as much as they wanted. After that the end of free sms messaging came: Operators introduced interconnect charges.
